Deaf and Hard of Hearing Counseling in Soldotna and Homer, Alaska
At Kenai Peninsula Mental Health, we provide counseling in Soldotna and Homer, Alaska for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, with sessions available in American Sign Language (ASL). We work with clients across the Kenai Peninsula to offer clear, direct communication and support that fits your needs.
Access to therapy in your preferred language matters. For Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients, communication barriers can make it harder to feel understood or fully engaged in the process.
We offer the option to work directly in ASL with a clinician who has extensive experience providing therapy in that setting. The goal is to create a space where you can communicate more naturally and focus on the work itself, not the translation.
Our ASL Experienced Counselors
-

Mira Featherstone - LPC
Mira provides counseling in both spoken English and American Sign Language and has experience working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients in clinical settings. Her approach focuses on clear communication, practical support, and helping clients engage in the process in a way that feels natural and manageable.
What is counseling in ASL like here.
Counseling in ASL follows the same structure as any other therapy session, with the main difference being how communication happens. Sessions are conducted directly in American Sign Language, which allows for more natural conversation without relying on an interpreter.
Working in ASL can reduce some of the barriers that come with translation and help you stay more focused on what you are thinking and feeling. The process itself remains the same. The goal is to understand what is going on in your life, build practical skills, and work through challenges at a pace that feels manageable.
Our clinician has experience providing therapy in ASL and working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in clinical settings. ASL is not the clinician’s first language, and this service is not the same as working with a certified interpreter or a Deaf clinician. In some situations, additional support or a different provider may be a better fit, and we can help guide that process if needed.
Can counseling in ASL really help?
If the challenges above sound familiar, or are making it harder to feel understood or supported, counseling in ASL may be helpful. Being able to communicate directly can make a meaningful difference in how comfortable and engaged you feel in the process.
Our provider in Soldotna and Homer works with Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients to understand what is going on beneath the surface, while also addressing what is showing up day to day. This might include stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, or the impact of past experiences.
As with all counseling, the focus is on both symptoms and underlying factors. Things like sleep, stress, connection, and daily routines can all play a role in how you feel and function. Sessions are paced in a way that feels manageable, with the goal of helping you feel more steady and more able to move forward.
If this sounds like something that could be helpful, you can reach out to get started. We will help determine if this is the right fit for your needs.
ASL and communication at KPMH
We offer the option to conduct counseling sessions in American Sign Language for Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients. This can allow for more direct communication and a more comfortable counseling experience for some individuals.
Our clinician has experience providing therapy in ASL and working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients in clinical settings. ASL is not the clinician’s first language, and this service is not the same as working with a certified interpreter or a Deaf clinician.
In some situations, particularly when communication needs are more complex or when a client prefers a native ASL user, a Deaf provider or certified interpreter may be a better fit. We want to be transparent about that so you can make an informed decision about what will best support you.
If additional support is needed, we are able to help guide you toward other resources or providers in the community.
